Studio Shaan Patel is an architecture practice based in Ahmedabad. The practice carries out a wide range of work for private households, public authorities, and religious and cultural institutions. We are as interested in the very small and particular as in the large and systematic, and each is valued for what it is. A piece of furniture and a masterplan ask for the same care, only at a different scale. Much of our work has a strong social dimension. We treat ordinary public infrastructure — places to learn, to gather, to work — as something worth making well, whatever its scale or budget.
We measure a building by how it holds several things at once: who it is for, where it stands, how it can be built and at what cost, how it meets its climate, and whether it gives pleasure. A good building keeps these in balance rather than sacrificing one for another. We are interested in buildings that are robust. By this we mean buildings that are built for today but made to survive many changes — that can take on new uses and be appropriated in ways we cannot foresee. Most of our projects sit in contexts that are still evolving, and we would rather design a building that can grow and adapt than one fixed to a single moment.
Another interest of the practice is in finding the most economical way to build spatially interesting buildings — to make plain and efficient means yield space that is generous, surprising, and worth inhabiting, and to reserve special construction for where it is truly called for. We are also interested in buildings that belong to their climate. There is a long history of building around us that has learned, patiently, how to meet heat, light, and rain. We look to those strategies and try to give them a contemporary articulation, rather than importing forms that ignore where they stand.
Shaan Patel leads the practice and teaches at the Architectural Association in London. The teaching and the practice sit close to one another: through his academic work he explores themes related to the concerns of the studio, and each keeps the other curious.
